Dear Mr Trump

In May of last year, I posted the the following entry entitled Dear President Trump.  In it, I attempted to express some understanding for the president's difficulties in governing to that point.  Clearly, being the POTUS is not anything like being CEO of Trump Enterprises, or the boss on various reality TV shows yet it seemed clear to me that perhaps that was what the president expected, only more so as he was now the most powerful man on earth.

Ultimately, I requested that President Trump resign from his office, and listed a number of reasons why his resignation might help unite the country and address some of our more serious problems.  I had expected that he would not be convicted by the Senate during his impeachment trial, as it ultimately played out this past January, which would, and did, confirm his belief that he was above reproach, despite the thinking by some GOP Senators that he had "learned his lesson", a phrase, I suspect may go down in history as one of the worst justifications for not removing someone who had abused their power.

Having just reread that post, and in light of the horrible mess that we are now in thanks to Trump's unadulterated bungling in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, I think it is time to send a more strongly worded letter to Mr Trump to request that he resign. I have also included a link to that first post if you are inclined to read it.

Dear Mr Trump,

We are less than 4 months away from the 2020 presidential election.  While you are clearly trailing in all polls, there is certainly still time for you to make the race closer.  Unfortunately, since you have clearly lost interest in creating a national policy to address COVID-19, you encourage the populace who still adore you to reject wearing a mask by your lack of example, and you are now attacking the very medical people whose advise actually did save some lives, I can only surmise that you will do whatever it takes to win in November, regardless of whether those actions benefit or hurt Americans or our country.

Please, Mr Trump, resign your office.

Resign so Mike Pence can stop choosing between his morals and his loyalty to you, and can establish a science based strategy that will keep the economy afloat without sacrificing another 100,000 lives.

Resign so the GOP Senators, Congressmen and governors can stop fearing the wrath of your devotees and craft policies that make public health sense, will align with a more focused national policy (see above), and will take the steam out of those misguided folks who think that they have a right to infect themselves, their family, their neighbors and their friends by not following even the most basic health preventive measures.

Resign so that the police forces who still think that minorities with grievances need to be dominated and controlled, and that skin color dictates police and judicial action, might be more open to the realization that treating others as you would like to be treated might be a better guiding principle than shoot first and ask questions later.

Resign so that the people who are still fighting the Civil War, might realize that it was a conflict over the rights to own and trade people as if they were property, nothing else, and that statues honoring those men, traitors to the lofty ideals of Abraham Lincoln, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and the very tenets of the Christian religion that so many of them deign to support, should be redesigned, at worst, to reflect the suffering and horrors of the treatment of the men, women and children whose skin color alone made them slaves, or, preferably, removed from public view, so as to not continue to chase the false narrative that they were patriots.  While we might forgive them of their sins as they were certainly men of their times, it doesn't mean we should place them in honor in our public parks and state capitols.

Resign so that the functionality of our government might be determined by men and women of skill, experience, and vision, rather than those who have a clear view of your colon.

Resign so Bill Barr can go back to whatever rock he climbed out from under, and we can get an Attorney General appointed who will do the work of the People as opposed to your dirty work.

Resign so that men who might choose to follow in the foot steps of the Oliver Stones, Paul Manaforts and Michael Cohens of the world will think twice before engaging in immoral, unethical or just purely sleazy activities to enrich their pockets, while certainly staining their souls.

Resign so that America might once again be perceived as a beacon of freedom, supporter of the world's democracies, critic of the world's despots.  Hang out with the Putins and Erdogans and Bolsonaros of the world all you want after you leave the White House, but it would be best if our president did not have bromances with such horrible leaders.

Resign so that when our schools reopen it will be because we have devised the safest way possible for children, teachers and support staff, not just because you might withhold funds for those school districts that don't do so.

Resign because it will eliminate the months of bullshit that will emanate from your mouth should you lose in a close election, and save America from even more disunity as you fling your lies and conspiracy theories on your favorite Fox faux news and opinion shows.

Finally, resign, if not for America, for yourself, since that is your one and only motivator.  Read Mary Trump's book, face the insecurities that have haunted you since your childhood, fight those demons that have created such a whole in your heart.  It is not too late to become a better you and it would be such a positive step, for you and our country, if you were to make that first step one last walk from the White House towards your future as ex-President Trump.

Regards,

Joe Pugnetti
